Proper Planning and Execution Expedite Shaft Oil Seal Replacement
December 7, 2005 -- Rulmeca Corporation recently assisted with "in situ" shaft oil seal replacement on 100 HP Motorized Pulley mounted on tail conveyor of huge Bucket Wheel Reclaimer. |
Overview of Tail Belt Drive:
Photo shows 4,740 lb Motorized Pulley with 31.5" diameter and 55.12" face width. Oil seals should be replaced after 20,000 operating hours. As shown below, this can be done without removing the Motorized Pulley from the structure.

Terminal Box Removal:
After electrician locked out 460v/3ph/60Hz power supply for Motorized Pulley, he removed conduit and cable from shaft-mounted terminal box. Personnel guard and mounting bracket must be removed next.
Close-up of Bearing Cover:
After removing guard, bearing cover screws and mounting bracket nut are fully exposed. Note evidence of minor oil leak on bearing cover. Before removing bracket belt must be secured and pulley suspended.
Bearing Cover Removal:
While lifting strap (around pulley) & cribbing support pulley weight, mounting bracket was removed. Finally, bearing cover & shaft oil seals can be removed and replaced. Always polish and lubricate shaft before installing new seals.
